You have made the decision to go on the Do Dham Yatra in 2026. First of all, good job! This isn’t just a trip. This choice will change something deep inside you. Kedarnath and Badrinath are not normal places. They have an energy that words can’t really explain. You have to experience it for yourself.
But before you pack your bags and go to the Himalayas, there are some very important things you need to know. A lot of people make mistakes that ruin their experience, not because they were careless, but because no one told them. This blog is here to make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
Do Dham is short for “Two Dhams.” Do Dham Yatra means going to two of the four holy Char Dham places, Kedarnath and Badrinath, as part of a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand.
Lord Shiva has 12 Jyotirlingas, and Kedarnath is one of them. It is 3,583 meters above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. The temple is very old and powerful, and the snow-covered peaks around it will leave you speechless.
Badrinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams that honor Lord Vishnu. It is 3,133 meters high and sits on the banks of the Alaknanda River, with the Neelkanth peak standing guard behind it.
Do Dham Yatra is one of the most complete spiritual journeys a Hindu can take because these two dhams cover both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
This is the first thing everyone asks — and rightly so.
The Char Dham temples in Uttarakhand open every year after winter when the snow begins to melt. The exact opening dates are announced on Mahashivratri every year by the temple priests based on the Hindu calendar.
For 2026, the expected opening dates are:
| Temple | Expected Opening | Altitude |
|---|---|---|
| Kedarnath Temple | Early May 2026 | 3,583 m |
| Badrinath Temple | Mid May 2026 | 3,133 m |
⚠️ Official dates will be confirmed closer to the time. Always verify before booking.
The best months to do Do Dham Yatra are May, June, September, and October. July and August bring heavy monsoon rains which make the routes dangerous and sometimes blocked. The temples close again in November for winter.
This is the question most people struggle with. Both options are available in 2026 and both have their own advantages.
This is the traditional yatra route. You travel by road via Haridwar and Rishikesh, passing through stunning Himalayan landscapes. The trek to Kedarnath is approximately 18 to 22 kilometres depending on your starting point. Many devotees feel that the physical journey itself is part of the spiritual experience.
Best for: Devotees who want the full traditional pilgrimage experience, families with time, and those who want to soak in the Himalayan beauty along the way.
Challenges: The trek to Kedarnath is physically demanding. You need to be reasonably fit. Altitude sickness is a real possibility if you rush.
Helicopter services fly directly to Kedarnath and Badrinath, cutting travel time significantly. This option has become extremely popular among elderly devotees, those with health conditions, and people with limited time.
Best for: Senior citizens, those with knee or heart conditions, busy professionals, and anyone who wants a comfortable yet complete darshan.
Challenges: Helicopter services depend heavily on weather conditions. Slots fill up very fast — sometimes months in advance. It is more expensive than the road option.
💡 Our advice: If you are above 60 or have any health issues, helicopter is the safer and smarter choice. If you are fit and have time, the road journey is deeply rewarding.
The standard Do Dham Yatra takes 5 Nights and 6 Days for both road and helicopter options. Here is a rough day-by-day breakdown:
Day 1 — Arrive Haridwar / Rishikesh
Day 2 — Drive to Kedarnath base camp (Sonprayag / Gaurikund)
Day 3 — Trek to Kedarnath, darshan, overnight stay
Day 4 — Return trek, drive towards Badrinath
Day 5 — Badrinath darshan and sightseeing
Day 6 — Return to Haridwar / departure
This is a comfortable pace. Rushing Do Dham Yatra in 3 or 4 days is possible but not recommended — especially because altitude acclimatisation takes time.
This is the part most people ignore — and then regret on the mountain.
Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres above sea level. Even physically fit people can experience altitude sickness if they are not prepared. Here is what you should do at least 4 weeks before your yatra:
Here is a practical packing list that most travel blogs miss:

Other Essentials:
Yes. The Uttarakhand government requires Char Dham Yatra registration for all pilgrims. This is mandatory and free of cost. Registration helps authorities track pilgrim numbers and manage safety on the routes.
How to register:
You will receive a registration slip that must be carried throughout the yatra. Some checkpoints will ask for it. Do not lose it.
⚠️ If you are booking through a tour operator like Spiritual Indian Journeys, we handle your registration as part of the package — so you do not need to worry about this separately.
1. Booking too late. Helicopter slots and good hotels get booked months in advance. If you are planning for May or June 2026, start booking now.
2. Underestimating the trek. The Kedarnath trek is 18 to 22 kilometres. It is not a casual walk. Prepare your body well in advance.
3. Not checking the weather. Himalayan weather changes within minutes. Always carry rain gear even if the morning looks sunny and clear.
4. Rushing the itinerary. Give yourself at least 5 to 6 days. Rushing means risking altitude sickness and missing the actual spiritual experience.
5. Going without a trusted tour operator. The routes, accommodations, and logistics of Do Dham Yatra are complex. Going without proper guidance leads to confusion, overcharging, and missed darshans. Always travel with an experienced and registered operator.
